how to install a firewire adapter card

how to install a firewire card/adapter.

The following are generic steps for installing a FireWire adapter:

i use a anti static wristband if i am touching internal components,

Power off the computer and remove the AC power cord.

Access the computer interior by removing the computer case.

Locate an available expansion slot and remove the slot cover and retaining
screw.

Not all computer cases have this now.

Firmly insert the PCI FireWire adapter into the PCI expansion slot.

Reinsert the retaining screw if necessary.

Replace the computer cover and reattach the power cord.

Power on the computer. The operating system should detect the newly installed hardware.

Most operating systems automatically detect that a FireWire adapter has been installed

and no special software is needed.

Windows normally detects the correct driver for the FireWire adapter,
but the computer may have to be rebooted to recognize the adapter.

If windows doesn't then.
Insert the driver disk/CD that ships with the adapter and browse to the location of the driver Follow the prompts for installing the drivers.

IEEE 1394 Troubleshooting

Use Device Manager to verify the correct installation for an IEEE 1394 device or port.
To verify
installation in Windows open Device Manager, doubleclick the 1394 Bus Controller option to verify that a IEEE 1394 host controller is present.

tech info.

IEEE 1394 has two data transfer modes—asynchronous and isochronous. The asynchronous
mode focuses on ensuring the data is delivered reliably. Isochronous transfers allow guaranteed
bandwidth (which is needed for audio/video transfers), but does not provide for error correction
or retransmission.

IEEE 1394 also supports plug and play like USB and the devices are hot swappable.(no need to turn off the computer to unplug leads or devices) IEEE 1394
devices (like USB devices) can receive power from the IEEE 1394 bus,on the motherboard or they can have an external
power source, but FireWire is more expensive to implement than USB. When a device is
attached or removed, all IEEE 1394 devices are reset. They reinitialize and all devices are
assigned a unique number.

the IEEE 1394 format was designed for highspeed
audio and video devices, and the standard has much greater throughput for applications
such as camcorder videos.

The IEEE 1394 bus allows automatic installation and configuration of up to 63 devices such as a scanner, printer,
modem, keyboard, mouse, monitor, hard drive, CD or DVD drives, hard disk
audio recorders, video conferencing cameras, and an audio/video device

take your time and dont try to force the adapter card into place,
